Electrical Engineering & Firmware Intern

We are seeking an Electrical Engineering and Firmware Intern to design, prototype, develop, and test an electronic subsystem for a marine robot. Work will involve both the electrical bring-up of the subsystem, as well as developing the firmware to support the subsystem.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Define requirements, ideation, and implementation of an electronic subsystem for a marine robot.
  • Conduct power and signal integrity tests as needed.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate the subsystem with the vehicle.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in C/C++ Embedded Firmware.
  • Familiarity with power electronics.
  • Familiarity with communication standards.
  • Able to complete a 12-week internship in summer 2024.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in STM32 and/or Atmel microcontroller firmware development.
  • Experience with low-level CAN bus implementation.
  • Previous work in marine robotics projects.
  • Experience in student build teams (FASE Driverless, Rocketry, etc.).
Guidance, Navigation, & Controls Engineer

We are seeking a GNC engineer to design and implement an autonomous GNC system for a novel hull crawling marine robot, with key requirements towards reliability and full navigational autonomy. They will be joining us as an early member of a new startup, and will be responsible for both the development of the product and for bringing on new engineers within their department as needed. Initial work will involve the development of a navigation and sensing architecture, followed by implementation thereof and additional hires for the department as needed.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Define requirements and then implement GNC software.
  • Define and perform system tuning and tests.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate GNC requirements with vehicle hardware.
  • Assist with making further GNC and software engineering hires as the company grows.

Required Qualifications:

  • High level of proficiency with robotic navigation, motion planning, and controls.
  • Experience in Hardware Sensor Integration, Low-level CAN bus protocols, and sensor fusion
  • Experience in low-level embedded C/C++ firmware development for microcontrollers such as STM32 and/or Atmel Family
  • Able to start full time in Summer 2024.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in marine robotics.
  • Experience in wheeled robot inertial guidance.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System).
  • 2-5 years’ work experience in jobs related to GNC engineering OR 2+ years of practical experience on a student build team (FSAE Driverless, Rocketry, etc.).
  • 4-year degree in engineering or equivalent, or a senior on track to graduate in May/June 2024 with the same.
Mechanical Design Engineer

We are seeking a mechanical engineer to join our team in designing a marine robot to clean and inspect ships, even while in transit. This robot must operate in a challenging flow and corrosion environment, requiring rigorous and creative design solutions with high reliability. They will be joining us as an early member of a new startup, and will be responsible for both the development of the product and for bringing on new engineers within their department as needed. Note that initially this will be in an individual contributor capacity.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design of structures and mechanisms as needed for the robot and its ancillary devices.
  • Procuring hardware and designing tooling for the same as needed to realize their designs.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate GNC requirements with vehicle hardware.
  • Have an active role in the hiring process as the team grows and hires more mechanical engineers.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with hardware design, fabrication, and assembly.
  • Experience in mechanical analysis, analytic and Finite Element Method (FEM/FEA).
  • Proficency in Computed Aided Design (CAD) software (e.g. Solidworks, CATIA, Siemens NX).
  • Able to start full time in Summer 2024.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in robotic hardware design.
  • Experience in non-linear Finite Element Modeling (e.g. ANSYS, ABAQUS).
  • Experience in CNC machining and other common manufacturing methods.
  • Knowledge of GD&T methods and practices.
  • Experience in hardware sourcing and procurement.
  • 2+ years’ work experience in jobs related to mechanical engineering, OR 2+ years of practical experience on a student build team (FSAE Driverless, Rocketry, etc.).
  • 4-year degree in engineering or equivalent, or a senior on track to graduate in May/June 2024 with the same.
Hydrodynamics Engineer

We are seeking a hydrodynamics engineer to design and analyze the hydrodynamic shell for a marine robot to clean hull biofouling, capable of operating in chaotic flow conditions while underway. They will be joining us as an early member of a new startup, and will be responsible for both the development of the product and for bringing on new engineers within their department as needed. Initial work will involve ideating architectures for the hydrodynamics shell, followed by implementation, fabrication, and testing.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Define requirements, ideate, and then optimize a hydrodynamic shell for a marine robot.
  • Conduct Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, as well as empirical testing as needed.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical and electrical engineers to integrate hydrodynamics requirements with the vehicle architecture.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with hydrofoil or airfoil design.
  • Experience with modern Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software.
  • Able to start full time in Summer 2024.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep knowledge of compressible fluid mechanics.
  • Experience in marine systems and ocean flow environments.
  • Previous work on maritime hydrodynamics projects, e.g. surface vessels, subsea ROVs, etc.
  • Experience in plastic or composites fabrication.
  • 2-5 years’ work experience in jobs related to hydrodynamic/aerodynamic design, OR 2+ years of practical experience on a student build team (FSAE Driverless, Rocketry, etc.).
  • 4-year degree in mechanical/aerodynamics engineering or equivalent, or a senior on track to graduate in May/June 2024 with the same.
